Colonel Elena M. Oberg is the Vice Commander, Air Force Research Laboratory, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. She assists the commander in accomplishing AFRL’s mission of leading the discovery, development, and integration of warfighting technologies for our air, space, and cyberspace force. She plays a key role in directing the Air Force’s $2.1 billion science and technology program and an additional $2.3 billion in externally funded research and development. She is also responsible for a government workforce of approximately 6,000 people in the laboratory’s nine component technology directorates, and the 711th Human Performance Wing.
Colonel Oberg was commissioned in 1993 through the Reserve Officer Training Corps. She has served in a variety of space acquisition, operations and command assignments including leading the mission team responsible for hardware delivery and successful launch of the first Titan IVB, leading a 140-person joint space operations crew providing simultaneous support to warfighters around the world and helping acquire the nation's next generation imaging satellite system. Colonel Oberg is a certified Senior Operations Controller and holds several acquisition certifications.
