Speaker: Col. Charles "Leans" McNiel, Deputy Director, Integrated Development Office (IDO)
Col Charles M. McNiel is the Deputy Director of the Integrated Development Office, Air Force Materiel Command which is responsible for executing Air Force pre-program of record acquisitions activities and driving concepts and requirements for strategic modernization in accordance with Air Force force design. He also serves as the Senior Materiel Leader for all Integrated Development Office acquisitions activities.
Colonel McNiel received his commission as a distinguished graduate of Officer Training School at Maxwell AFB, Alabama in December 2003. He is a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Test Pilot School and is a senior flight test engineer with over 500 flight hours in 30 aircraft types. Prior to assuming his current position, he was the Chief of the Weapons Capacity Task Force, Armament Directorate, Air Force Life Cycle Management Center, Eglin Air Force Base Florida.
Colonel McNiel has planned, conducted, directed, and led flight and ground testing for more than a dozen U.S. and Allied weapon systems, led research and development of materials solutions for aerospace applications, served as a Staff officer at the Joint Coalition Task Force and Headquarters Air Force levels, commanded a Test Squadron, and served as a Materiel Leader on the B-21 program. He was a recipient of the 2018 Collier Trophy for his contributions to the F-16 Automatic Ground Collision Avoidance System, and a recipient of the 2019 Air Force Materiel Command Aircrew of Distinction Award for extinguishing an in-flight cabin fire aboard an experimental C-12J aircraft.
