William "Bill" Bernstein

AFRL, Branch Technical Advisor for Digital Manufacturing and Supply Chain in the Manufacturing

Dr. William "Bill" Bernstein, PhD is the Branch Technical Advisor for Digital Manufacturing and Supply Chain in the Manufacturing and Industrial Technologies Division at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL).  Dr. Bernstein also serves as the Lead for the Advanced Manufacturing Technologies (AMT) portfolio, comprising of three AFRL ManTech programs: Additive Manufacturing, Digital Enterprise, and Future Factory. He also sits on the Digital Manufacturing Research Team, which focuses on human-machine intelligence, interfaces, and coordination.   Dr. Bernstein holds a PhD and MS in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University and a BS in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Cincinnati.  He has published over 60 peer-reviewed articles and has been awarded two US patents. He has received multiple honors and awards, including the 2019 ASME Computers in Engineering (CIE) Young Engineer Award and a 2020 Department of Commerce Bronze Medal Award. Dr. Bernstein currently serves as an Associate Editor for the ASME Journal of Computing and Information Sciences in Engineering, Vice Chair of the ASME Design for Manufacturing and the Life Cycle Technical Committee, and Chair of the JDMTP AME Subpanel Working Group on Gaps, Trends, and Opportunities.  His current research interests include Augmented Reality, PLM Interoperability, and Industrial Standards Development.
